2018 Palma International Boat Show Is Biggest Yet
The Port of Palma welcomes the Mediterranean’s well-heeled “wet set” for the region’s most important boat show, boasting greater numbers across the board and billed as the biggest in history.
Oceanmax is once again partnering with Galicia-based marine chandler Cleansailing for the 35th Palma International Boat Show, held April 27 to May 1. Majorca’s vibrant capital provides the perfect backdrop for the mammoth industry event, which launches the Mediterranean yachting season and incorporates the Palma Superyacht Show for the sixth year running. More than 40,000 visitors are expected to descend upon Moll Vell Marina over the show’s five days.
“Palma is one of the busiest yachting communities in the Med, particularly when it comes to high-end, expensive yachts,” says Cleansailing sales manager Jesús González-Llanos Romero. “It also has quite a lot of associated industry; most of the Propspeed sold in Spain is sold here.”
This year’s show sees a 15 percent increase in exhibition space—up to 80,000 square meters on water and land—and features 14 specialty categories, from boat repair and maintenance to nautical tourism and everything in between. So far, 251 vendors from more than 25 countries are slated to exhibit, 72 in the superyacht category.
“The most interesting visitors are boat owners, crew and of course the industry professionals who work here.” While there aren’t as many boatbuilders, Jesús says that the repair, maintenance and refitting categories are well-represented. Taking advantage of that fact, Oceanmax managing director Clint Jones will be on hand to support Cleansailing, our Spanish distributor, while giving Palma a taste of his trademark energy, enthusiasm and expertise on Propspeed. Of last year’s show, Jesús says, “It was great! The market’s growing, so it was better than the year before. Lots of visitors, new applicators, happy clients and business prospects. This year, we look forward to educating even more industry members about the benefits of Propspeed foul-release coating in keeping running gear clean.”
The Palma Superyacht Show, the show within the show, will present a diverse collection of 80 yachts for sale and/or charter plus 85 international exhibitors. New this year is a 72-meter floating bridge designed to enhance guest flow around a circular route linking the two shows.
Back for a second year is the refit and repair area, reflecting Palma’s growing status as the Mediterranean’s premier yacht-servicing hub. Industry experts attribute the growth in demand to a 2014 relaxation in regional regulations for charter yachts in the 15-meter-plus category, which in the past added 12 percent in taxes and registration fees to a yacht’s purchase price.
The show is open daily from 11am to 8pm with the exception of Saturday, April 28, when it closes at 11pm to accommodate the show’s popular Sea Night party. Entry is € 6 and kids under 12 are free.
